Does God want us to do morally right? Seems like a silly question, I know. Yet, that is the opinion of one who wrote against me in a recent letter to the editor. “God would want us to do what is morally right, to put an end to the moral evils of persecution if that is, there is a God” [sic].
The opinion writer thinks I am confused; she helps me out of my confusion by giving me what she thinks God wants. She does not even know whether or not God exists, and she postulates what God wants. Arrogant? You can judge.
This gets to a larger point, however. Atheism and agnosticism adopt a morality that can’t get any higher than “I think.” If there is a collective response of atheists and/or agnostics, then it is “We think…” That is the highest they can go. In order to give themselves a “high” standard they formed the dogmatic creed of the Humanist Manifestos I and II. This gives them their collective “we.” Still, that is all the higher they can go.
Will Durant, an atheistic philosopher of many years ago, wrote a book “On the Meaning of Life” (1932). In this book he confronts the “bitterest possibilities” of life’s meaning without God. He said, “The growth and spread of knowledge, for which so many idealists and reformers prayed, has resulted in disillusionment which has almost broken the spirit of our race” (p. 4).
I smiled at this lecture in print of hers to me because she thinks I should accept what she thinks God wants.
Interesting……,
I don’t think there is true or false math as to what we think god wants from us.
God is a personal choice and a very complex personal journey, what god means to me can be very different from your own understanding of him and to some even a taboo.
I believe there is a god, and i also believe human beings (not all) have an almost unrealistic romantic idea of him, like he makes all possible and all comes true… that to me is down right ridiculous and a recipe for failure and disaster .
God is not a chauffeur, however he answers all prayers(depending on what prayer is to one), good and evil if we stay long enough and consistent in them through hard work.
Prayer to me is a personal monologue with something greater than i. I bow and fear greatly. THAT is god to me.
Thank you for reading.
I would like to challenge your thinking on this. Why is it that you think there is no “true or false math” to what God wants from us? It is true that God is a personal choice and journey, but if one can make a choice to journey, this implies some knowledge of him and his way.
When you said God answers prayer, I would be interested in understanding from you how you would come to know that.
I do believe you are correct with how most people look at the Lord in an unrealistic way. I do what I can to neutralize this understanding.
i do believe there is no true or false to god in the eyes of a man, how can a man born in sin ,live in sin be so accurate in knowing and full fully understand god? it is impossible.
” but if one can make a choice to journey, this implies some knowledge of him and his way. ”
not really, to believe in god is living by faith and self knowing without a doubt that there is a bigger being\force beyond measure, you don’t have to be smart or master any craft to know his ways, that is the reason why we kneel , beg and fear him.. if we knew our ways around him or to him the fear will be lessened for it is human nature to fear only where we don’t know…
we don’t know god, we understand and only have an idea of him basing on the laws of the bible written by another man and preached to us by another who might also translate the words verbally to us only per his best understanding. i see no maths here but conflict.
to know god is to be humble, to know god is to do to others as we would like them to do to us, to know god is to be blind and accept to knowing nothing and only believe in his guidance that it is only him that knows it all. you have to be child to know him, and as far as we know children know nothing ..
in short to know god is to know that you know nothing.
. let it be………….
as for saying god answers all prayers, yes he does, both good and bad. it depends on what prayer is to one and how much you want what ever it is that you so seek…..seek you shall find…. and ” whom of a father gives his child stones when being asked for bread?……..”
i have said before that prayer to me is a very personal honest monologue between me and god. and everything asked , said from the heart and confessed through the mouth so it shall be if we believe , and stay on it through hard work, it will come true..
also prayers come true if we seek within our reach. like it is ridiculous to ask god to be taller when we already know it wont happen , lets be realistic and not set the standard high and create a room to doubt….. then we think he doesn’t answer us because we expecting him to be a chauffeur which he will never be.
“the big breaks that we so seek are not in space, are not in the air, and definitely not in god but within us. ”
he gave us this life , he gave us the five senses so we can create and achieve for his glory .. he created us and with his mercy some of us are here to tell.. and to share may be even with those yet to come, our children.
i find it amazing that we still praying for what we have already been given, you want a job, we have the legs to walk to, we have the voice the speak and ask and eyes to see the road to .. we want love, open up and walk the walks of a lover.. you want a Porsche , well go to school ,get a paying job, save then buy it or create something and make money . then buy it.. there is no god here..
so what are asking him to do here again when we can? if anything we are the ones holding back because we are refusing to exercise what we already have and in return accuse god for not answering us.
once we know what it is to ask for we will see his glory and stop making god wait on us to be and glorify him.
i pray for mercy , i pray for time in this world and i pray for wisdom and great health for all. i also watch those around me and learn from , most important i am open to all for i do not know where my angel is……………..god does not give from his hand.
everything else we want we create, this is how i know that all prayers are answered.
my grammar is bad, excuse me…
i also believe that the qustion of god can never be answerd by a man without ones sanity quwstioned, this is just how far and deep and mistreroius god is.
i also believe that the question of god can never be answered by a man without ones sanity questioned, this is just how far and deep and mysterious god is…..
this is the last part edited… sorry
