He who guards his mouth preserves his life, But he who opens wide his lips shall have destruction (Proverbs 13:3, NKJV). The Scriptures teach that from the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks (Matt. 12:33-37), and this pertains to both those who are righteous as well as those who are wicked. When we tie this together with Proverbs 4:23 (guarding our hearts), then those words that come from the mouth will be restrained and, if we are righteous, properly placed. On the other hand, the one who is talkative is merely is opening up his mouth to hear himself speak; it won’t be long before his words become a trap for himself.  Moreover, the rash man speaks without substantive thought; he reacts. Those who do so are quickly looked upon as being fools.
