A righteous man hates lying, But a wicked man is loathsome and comes to shame (Proverbs 13:5, NKJV). A righteous man hates lying to others and he hates lying to himself. It may very well be the case that he has much success with the former, but struggles with the latter. In such cases he is not righteous. What he needs to do is get on his knees and ask the Lord for His mercy, forgiveness, and strength. In the end, this is what makes him righteous. A wicked person, on the other hand, cares not in the slightest about any of this – unless it serves his own ambition; in such cases, he only deceives himself. To a people long ago, Moses made it very clear to those who lived on the east side of the Jordan (Numbers 32), and the principle applies today – we can be sure that our sins will find us out if we fail to make things right with God!
