The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, that one may turn away from the snares of death (Proverbs 14:27, ESV). This is another one of those proverbs that has an application in two areas. We can see it rather quickly. First, the Lord’s fear in us means that we hear and apply the teachings of righteousness; this helps very well in this physical realm in which we live. We are often able to see dangers before they occur and prevent ourselves from being entangled in them (cf. 2 Cor. 2:11). Second, and ultimately, the fountain of life is in Jesus. Whatever pleasure and safety we experience in this world, God has given us greater meaning than merely this life.
