A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps (Proverbs 16:9, KJV). The last time you made plans concerning some big trip or adventure – did you give thought to the Lord? A great many people live in accordance with the first portion of the verse, but take no thought with regard to the latter. In other words, plans are made, but no thought is given to the Lord with regard to any of those plans. James addresses this same thought in his epistle. “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we are going to such and such a city and stay a year, go into business and make money,’ although you do not have the slightest knowledge of tomorrow. What is the nature of your life? It is really nothing but a mist which appears for a little while and then disappears. Instead, you ought to say, ‘If the Lord is willing, we shall live and do this or that.’ But, as it is, you boast of your proud pretensions. All such boasting is wicked. So when a man knows what is right but does not do it, he is guilty of sin” (James 4:13-17, Williams New Testament). When the Lord is your guide in life, then all your plans will be in the direction of His will. In other words, you will not think of doing anything apart from His will accomplished in your life. Certainly, a step in the right direction. RT
