Building Materials

In what is commonly known as the Sermon on the Mount, the Lord spoke plainly about the obligation each of us have concerning the building of our house. The house, in this context, is not a physical structure, but a spiritual structure (the soul/spirit) housed in an “earthly tabernacle” (that is, our respective bodies). Therefore whoever hears these sayings of Mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man who built his house on the rock: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it did not fall, for it was founded on the rock. But everyone who hears these sayings of Mine, and does not do them, will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand: and the rain descended, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house; and it fell. And great was its fall (Matthew 7:24-27, NKJV).

Clearly, the “rock” in this context is the rock of Jesus Christ (Ephesians 2:20-22). So, with the foundation in place, what building materials are we to use? Really, the only building material that any of us should use is that building material that is perfect. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it, and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does (James 1:25). It is this perfect law of liberty with which there are no flaws. Consequently, to use building materials that originate in the minds of man, we use building materials that are fully-flawed. Besides, that which man puts forth will not be that which will judge us on the last day. He who rejects Me, and does not receive My words, has that which judges him–the word that I have spoken will judge him in the last day (John 12:48).

It is to our advantage and to our benefit to use material of a different sort. It is “for certain” that we will use “building material” to build our lives. Why not use that material that never corrupts, material that is eternal in nature and spiritual in power. RT
