direction

Frequently, when life seems to be a tempestuous wind, the struggles to maintain a sense of balance becomes confused. This is all the more reason to stay the course. Not just any course, but the Lord’s course of life. With the former, you’re not sure where it will end up. With the latter, you can be sure you’ll arrive at the Lord’s destination. In the end, don’t think for even a moment you know better than the Lord. If you do, be reminded of Proverbs 21:30.

Steps Directed

Psalm 37:23-24—The steps of a good man are ordered by the LORD, And He delights in his way. Though he fall, he shall not be utterly cast down; For the LORD upholds him with His hand (NKJV).

Are your steps directed in the Lord’s way? It might be that you will answer, “I surely hope so!” That answer does not have to be with that tinge of doubt; rather, one’s answer can be, “For certain they are!” The difference between the two is this: with the first reply, one simply speaks of a desire, but no certainty. With the latter, that desire is actually a certainty. Certainty is not arrogant. Look at the passage and see if there is any arrogance within the words. A person who is devoted to the Lord knows well the failings of life, and he knows well his (her) own failings especially. Because there is an awareness of human frailties, it is all the more important to trust in One who has no failings. With this trust the life directed is directed by the steps the Lord walked and not one’s own. The NLT (New Living Translation) gives a good sense of what is said, “The Lord directs the steps of the godly. He delights in every details of their lives. Though they stumble, they will never fall, for the Lord holds them by the hand.”

The steps you take in life direct you toward a destination. It is up to you to determine the destination that you desire to arrive at. If the destination we seek to arrive at is with the Lord, then it is His way of righteousness that compels us to alter our thinking from our own, to the Lord’s (Galatians 2:20). On the other hand, if the direction is our own making, then the direction we have chosen is with the “god of this world” (2 Cor. 4:4), and it can be no other way. Choose wisely, then, for the choice made is a destination’s journey (cf. Luke 13:22). RT
