Some Thoughts on First Timothy (11)

preach the word, preacher, role, study

What role does the preacher play or have in the local congregation? Looking at 4:11-16, we notice the following:

First, everything Paul wrote up to this point (1:1-4:10) must be taught.

Second, if he is a young man (as Timothy was), he must not allow others to look down on him because of his youthfulness, he can best “combat” this by giving attention to the way he speaks (preaches), the life he lives in action, the love he shows to others, the faith that he exhibits in his handling of life’s ordinary problems, the purity of the way he lives his life, and is he an example to others. People pay attention to things like this. They will note failures, but if these qualities abound, the failures will be passed over without much thought.

Third, he is to be a “man of the book” or, in other words, a man who puts much emphasis on a “thus saith the Lord.” He is not to preach opinions, politics, feel-good stories – unless they have a direct connection to what the Scriptures teach. Anything that has man has the source-origin is not worthy of attention, or very little attention. e is not to preach his opinion

Fourth, he is to take the necessary time to give attention to these things. That means, he must devote hour on hours to study so he is prepared to teach others. Recommendation: Bible reading: 10 Old Testament chapters daily, 15 New Testament chapters daily, then exegetical work.

NOTE: Paul’s exhortation to Timothy in 4:14 is an exclusive point of application to Timothy, not those in today’s pulpit (cf. 1:18; 2 Tim. 1:6).

One’s Own Counsel

counsel, effort, preacher, runaway, teacher

A teacher comes into the classroom and sees one of her student’s discouragement on his face. She knows he has been struggling in keeping up with classroom work, but to this point he has sought no help from her or any of the other teachers. She comes in and walks over to the student and sits down beside him and begins to speak. She learns from him that he hates school, others make fun of him, life at home is miserable and that he can’t do anything right. She tries to encourage him, letting him know that she is available if he wants to talk. He is reassured, but she reads his face and sees that he is not interested in sharing his problem with her. Finally, at this point, she becomes a little more plain-spoken and says, “You can’t hardly improve your grades in school with the effort you put forth. You have not come to me seeking any kind of help; instead, you have tried to go it alone. When I did offer you some help, you ran away. You did not want to address the difficulties that you have placed yourself in. With such a counsel that you give yourself there is no chance for you to improve your grades or your life like you want! If you want a difference in your life to begin, start with where you are at and resolve to persevere through the hard times that will surely come. If you want it bad enough, then you will do what it takes to get to the point you want to be.”

Teachers need to take their own counsel as they offer counsel to the youth.

A preacher looks at the congregation and sees exactly this among many of the members. Lest the preacher be excused, he needs to take his own counsel also.  RT

The Preacher in the Room

entertainment, influence, preacher, television

In the living room (or some other room of the house) is a screen; it may be in a box or it might be flat, but the screen is there and it is a preacher of sorts. It is not the preacher that readily comes to mind when thinking on the word; that preacher is in a building on Sunday, perhaps on Wednesday. This preacher that is in the living room (or some other room) is of a different sort. The one (or more than one) in the house provides a variety of messages for the “called out” (or should that be “called in”). If one message is not sufficient, then with the click of a button another message can be chosen. The key for the “called-in” is to be entertained, influenced, and instructed. Unbeknownst, however, for those called in to the house to watch a program (or two) is the nature of the instruction that is actually finding a home in the heart of the instructed. One preacher talks about God and righteous living, but the preacher in the living room talks little of this if at all. One preacher is seen and heard on Sunday (perhaps Wednesday), and must compete with the preacher sitting in the living room. Which one, do you think, has the greater influence?
