The Proverbs of Solomon

blessings, righteous, violence

“Blessings are upon the head of the righteous; But violence covereth the mouth of the wicked” (10:6 ASV).

The English Standard Version (ESV) read slightly different, “Blessings are on the head of the righteous, but the mouth of the wicked conceals violence”, which seems to give clarity to the proverb. The blessings that are on the head come from two sources. First, there is the source of blessing that comes from those on earth that like being around you and are willing to give you their time and, if necessary, their possessions to help you when you are in a pinch. Second, there is the source that is from the Lord. Living righteously is difficult in this evil world; it always has been. Thus, when one is determined to do so, the Lord takes note and blesses that person with the promises of life. This is done because of the response given to His Son Jesus. All spiritual blessing are in Christ and that means, consequently, there are no spiritual blessings that come from the Lord outside of Christ. On the other hand, those of a different spirit, those who have little or no regard for the Lord, they live by a different standard, a standard of their own making, a standard that can generate violence. You won’t know, though, until it is perpetrated against you, someone near you or you read about it in the news. Even if there is no violence, the wicked who reject the Lord (that is, don’t obey), they have their coming day, it’s called Judgment Day. RT

How to Answer (Word to the Wise)

The heart of the righteous studies how to answer, But the mouth of the wicked pours forth evil (Proverbs 15:28, NKJV). What does the heart of the righteous study? Do they study the Bible? The newspaper? An English grammar book? Other translations read “ponder” (ESV), “consider” (NET), “meditates” (Brenton; LXX), and “thinks carefully” (NLT). The teaching of the first-half of the proverb is this: in the context of a life lived according to a righteous way of thinking, the righteous person will be slow to answer, making sure that which is said by another is thoughtfully considered (cf. James 1:19-20). On the other hand, as the Contemporary English Version (CEV) reads, “Good people think before they answer, but the wicked speak evil without ever thinking.” Whether or not rashness is in view, the point is that the one who lives according to his wicked ways – what wisdom can come from him? The Facade (A Word to the Wise)

facade, hypocrisy, righteous

The way of the wicked is an abomination to the LORD, But He loves him who follows righteousness. (Proverbs 15:9, NKJV). As mentioned with the previous proverb, those who have a shell (façade) of religious piety offer to the Lord only wickedness. These are hypocrites. The openly wicked have more “honor” to them than the hypocrites, for at least all pretense is shunned. In both cases, however, neither one of them are in good standing with the Lord! For those who live in accordance with the righteous way of the Lord, the Lord is on their side, even when they get weak in their walk with Christ.
